What to Expect from the Wide Range of Iron Sands:
Behavior in Panning:
Fine particles (e.g., 500 mesh) cling to everything—gold, the pan, and other black sands. They create a "muddy" slurry that’s difficult to see through.
Medium particles (e.g., 100–200 mesh) settle faster and make the gold hide in layers.
Coarser particles (e.g., 30–80 mesh) confuse the eye—many resemble small flakes of gold and distract from the real recovery.
Increased Magnet Interference:
Coarse and fine magnetite behave differently under a magnet, pulling unevenly and stirring up the fine material, which can float or resettle over gold.
Layer Complexity:
